Job Hunting Strategy during Recession

I would like to use the example of consumer business for the Job Hunting example.

When you have limited budget, the most sensible thing to do is shopping for ‘needs’ instead of ‘wants’. Likewise, when a job hunter is faced with limited choices and a very competitive job market, he or she has to be prudent and realistic.

The main objective of the job hunter should be survival during the recession period and take the opportunity to strengthen your skills and abilities to land the ideal job –the ‘wants’ - when the economy recovers.

During recession when companies are cutting jobs and there are more job hunters than jobs available, employers want the best for less. On the other hand, job hunters have less or no choices in such situation.

For survival, job hunters must change their tactics to meet their objectives.

If you are unclear or frustrated in your efforts to find the right job for yourself, do the following:

  • Ask yourself what are the 10 main requirements of the position that you are seeking, from the employer's angle?
  • Then plan how you can demonstrate to the prospective employer your ability to offer an irresistible way to satisfy the above requirements, and more?

Do it for your:

  • CV and short covering letter
  • Interview preparation

Awareness and Alignment
Find out where you are right now?
Where you want to be?
Then plan how to get there.

If you cannot yet meet and exceed the requirements of your ideal employer’s expectation, take steps to achieve these capabilities and attributes.
Break it down into steps or stages and plan to get the job you want.

Marketing Plan to Get the Job you Want
When employers are not hiring more due to the economic situation, job application becomes more critical – it’s an art and not science anymore. Your application – letter and CV have to be unique and relevant to what the organization is looking for. Simply put, your application amongst the hundreds must get noticed and picked up.

The most difficult stage of the job search is getting your application noticed. You have to create a unique opportunity for yourself. You need to make sure you stand out when someone in the organization reads your letter.

The objective of your application is to get a meeting or interview with someone from the organization that may have some job opportunities.

The recent global economic ‘Tsunami’ has greatly ‘drowned’ the growth of companies big and small. Singapore, the tiny Red Dot is not spared either. The constant corporate restructurings, mergers, acquisitions and downsizings have resulted in workplace trends characterized by job insecurity, flatter organizations, and fewer promotions. Bottom line - Survival is the mantra of the day for most company. As a result, even in stable firms, employers are increasingly unwilling to promise and formally manage career opportunities.

For MOST employees, worrying about losing their jobs becomes a routine. It’s a LOSE-LOSE situation, company’s productivity drops as a result of low morale, thus prolonging the recovery of the firm.
